Daily Management in Mining

Management in mining is a hard task to accomplish well. Being able to coordinate a mining, refining, or processing plant requires simple, timely, and consistent communication.

The Approach

The system was defined after bench-marking sites in Western Australia, Queensland, and Northern Territory of Australia.

The first meeting to get working was the Site Leadership group daily meeting. The consultant worked with the management team to setup the daily meeting. The meeting lasts typically 10 minutes.  Then a small group of meetings that connect the Site Meeting with a remote control room were established.  This included the Operator hand over, Team startup meeting, Team Meeting and then site meeting.  Piloting in one stream enabled the learning to not have an Area Meeting with the Area Manager and the Superintendents.

The Final Step

Once the meetings were defined the consultant then documented the meeting and trained Superintendents to roll out these meetings in their own areas.

Supporting material included the writing of an in house book and creating short videos.

The Result

The mine was able to engage the people with a daily discussion that focused on the few critical outcomes they need. Having efficient meetings that also delegates much information enabled substantial increase in additional tonnes per day.
