What would it be like watching a televised football game without a scoreboard?
Hi, I’m Roger Crothers Welcome to this TXM Lean minute.
Its hard to imagine sitting through a football game without a score board, not knowing who won or lost and by how much
Why is this any different in your organisation, without good visual metrics it’s difficult for your teams to know when they have had a good day or a bad day.
The problem is when people think of visual metrics they picture a wall full of charts and graphs.
When developing visible metrics it is important that the measures resinate with your team. The metrics should be designed by the team for the team.
Its important that visible metrics measure all key areas of the organisation like safety, quality, performance and cost.
The metrics should be based on the people performing the work, this will drive the right conversations at the right level.
Keep the visual metrics old school with simple indicators and charts, don’t underestimate the power of the red and green pen. Get the team to fill out their own numbers using green for in control/ on-target or red pen out of control / under target.
Manually filling in metrics should drive problem solving and the right behaviours. By making performance targets visible and enabling staff to influence those results through problem solving will drive a continuous improvement culture.
