THE ELEMENTS OF QUICK CHANGE OVER

Quick Change Over, otherwise known as Setup Reduction or Single Minute Exchange of Dies, is a technique that minimizes the downtime of assets during configuration changes.  Quick Change Over seeks to achieve two goals: 1) minimise the volume of internal operations (i.e. operations that require the process to be stopped); and 2) minimise the waste in the internal operations.

THE BENEFITS OF QUICK CHANGE OVER

Quick Change Over has the benefit of maximizing asset and critical resource utilization.  This is particularly important for capacity constrained assets, where every second affects the capacity of the entire value stream.

An important secondary benefit of Quick Change Over is the ability to reduce the Economic Order Quantity of items.  Change over costs are often attributed to large batch sizes, providing false economies.
